Montana Democrat Governor Steve Bullock Rebukes DGA’s Midterm Strategy In Governors’ Races

As Chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, Seattle Liberal Jay Inslee has made a referendum on President Trump the main focus of the organization’s 2018 midterm strategy, claiming recently that Democrat governors represent “the resistance movement against Donald Trump.”

But now, one of the DGA’s most prominent members, Montana Governor and former DGA Chairman Steve Bullock is rebuking this strategy, telling ABC News that Democrats will suffer at the ballot box and lose the midterms if they make the election “just a referendum” against Donald Trump. Bullock served as DGA Chairman in 2015 and has remained an active member of the group, even as the number of Democrat governors around the nation has declined steadily in recent election cycles.

Seattle Liberal Jay Inslee and the DGA think that making this year’s gubernatorial races a referendum on the President is their road to winning, but with a prominent member of the organization calling this plan a losing strategy, it’s clear that Democrat governors continue to be divided on how best to communicate with voters.

The Hill reports:

“Montana Gov. Steve Bullock (D) on Wednesday said Democrats will lose the November midterm elections if they make them “just a referendum” on President Trump.

The red-state Democrat told ABC’s ‘Powerhouse Politics’ podcast that negative messaging about the president is not enough to win tight races.

‘It’s not enough from my perspective just to be against him,’ said Bullock, the head of the National Governors Association. ‘It’s got to be what we are for.'”
