Struggling to stand out to South Carolina voters as polls show him locked in a tight race for his party’s nomination, Liberal Politician James Smith is now receiving heavy criticism for ducking a Democrat gubernatorial debate. Both of Smith’s rivals, Phil Noble and Marguerite Willis, attacked Smith for refusing to attend the televised event at Furman University over this past weekend, and asked the South Carolina Democrat Party to weigh in on his absence.
A recent poll showed Smith tied with Noble at 27 percent each, with Willis not far behind at 21 percent, making it a wide open three-way contest for the Democrat nomination. For weeks, Smith has been targeted by Willis and Noble, who criticized “his tired slogans and worn-out ideas” while claiming his record on key issues should “disqualify” him from the nomination.
As rhetoric between South Carolina’s Democrat gubernatorial candidates continues to escalate while polls show no clear frontrunner in the race, the party’s increasingly divisive primary will only further damage their chances of competing in November’s general election.
