Colorado Democrat Governor John Hickenlooper has long advocated for his party to adopt centrist policies to appeal to a “bigger tent” of voters.
But, rather than following Hickenlooper’s lead, many of the Democrat candidates vying to succeed him are advocating far-left policies in hopes of appealing to primary voters.
At a forum last week, this dynamic was on full display, as Jared Polis, Cary Kennedy, and Mike Johnston, all rejected Hickenlooper’s more moderate health care policies, instead embracing single-payer health care.
As these candidates continue to race to the far-left, their chances of retaining Hickenlooper’s big-tent coalition keeps diminishing.
