During First Debate, Fred Hubbell Misleads Iowans About His Tax Hike Plans

Iowa Democrat Fred Hubbell has made rolling back Republican Governor Kim Reynolds’ tax relief – the largest tax cuts in state history –  a centerpiece of his campaign. But at last night’s gubernatorial debate, Hubbell blatantly attempted to mislead Iowans about his tax hike plans.

Asked about his tax plans, Hubbell said that he supports a “tax break for middle class Iowans.” But that’s exactly the opposite of what Hubbell has been proposing on the campaign trail.

In June, Hubbell promised that he would “peel back” all of the tax cuts passed by Governor Reynolds. Hubbell stated, We’re gonna have to peel back all those tax cuts… When asked directly about both individual and corporate tax cuts, Hubbell replies, I’m talking about all the tax cuts.”  Watch here.

Hubbell also doubled down on his plan to peel back Reynolds’ tax cuts, which lower taxes on the middle class, just this month. Hubbell told the Des Moines Register editorial board that “we’re gonna have to take a serious look at” reversing Governor Reynolds’ tax cuts.

If Fred Hubbell can’t be honest about his tax hike plans when speaking directly to the people of Iowa, he can’t be trusted to be governor.
