Ahead of Ohio Dem Gov Debate, Richard Cordray Remains Silent On CFPB Scandals

At tonight’s Ohio Democrat gubernatorial debate, Washington D.C. Bureaucrat Richard Cordray will face off against former Congressman Dennis Kucinich for the first time as the two have stepped up their attacks on one another in an increasingly divisive primary contest. But while Cordray owes Ohio voters an answer for his contradictory positions on the issues, he also has yet to respond to potential scandals surrounding his tenure at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Not only was Cordray’s CFPB accused of massive bureaucratic overreach for years, but it has also faced allegations of falsifying documents as well as “widespread racism and gender discrimination” at the bureau while Cordray was its director. The CFPB also was caught allegedly funneling tens of millions in taxpayer-funded contracts to Democrat ad makers last year under Cordray’s leadership. To make matters worse, Cordray also heavily overspent on luxurious publicly funded renovations to the CFPB’s headquarters. And when Cordray finally left the agency in November, he threw the agency into chaos with a failed attempt to appoint his chief of staff to succeed him in order to circumvent the president’s appointed director.

If Cordray wants to tout his resume as head of the CFPB bureaucracy on the campaign trail, he cannot ignore the very serious scandals facing the agency that he led for nearly five years. Cordray owes Ohio voters answers about his mismanagement of the CFPB.
