Democrat Governor Gina Raimondo’s mismanagement of Rhode Island’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) continues to have major consequences.
A new DCYF report reveals that over the course of two years during Raimondo’s term in office, there have been over 30 fatalities and near fatalities among children under the agency’s care. This comes after Raimondo staffed the agency with underqualified leadership, ignored recommendations by the state’s child advocate to improve the DCYF, and signed into law a budget in 2016 that eliminated the equivalent of 43 full-time positions from the agency. To make matters worse, just months ago it was revealed that Raimondo’s DCYF did business with a group home company described as “a criminal enterprise,” while one of its managers was charged with trafficking a minor for prostitution.
Despite alarming reports of alleged neglect and worse by DCYF workers and a disturbingly high number of child fatalities among children in the agency’s care, Raimondo has taken no measurable action to address the DCYF’s growing scandal. Rhode Island deserves better.
