As Nevada’s Democrat gubernatorial primary fight between Steve Sisolak and Chris Giunchigliani escalates into a full-on “bloodbath,” both candidates are spending huge sums of money just to win over their party’s voters, leaving them with less resources for the general election.
The Nevada Independent reports that Sisolak has spent roughly $5.2 million this year alone to win his primary, raising only $1.4 million in the same period, while Giunchigliani spent little over $1 million and raised nearly $841,000. Both Democrats were outraised by the leading Republican candidate.
The Nevada Independent also writes that “Sisolak’s aggressive primary spending could put him at a disadvantage heading into a general election race if he beats Giunchigliani” since he has already spent about 88 percent of his initial cash on hand. With Sisolak and Giunchigliani forced to spend big just to win over supporters of their own party, their bitter and expensive primary fight continues to hurt Nevada Democrats’ chances of winning in November.
