New Mexico Democrat gubernatorial candidate Michelle Lujan Grisham continues to be plagued by accusations that the New Mexico Democrat party is “rigging” the primary in her favor.
Three of her fellow Democrat primary candidates, Jeff Apodaca, Joseph Cervantes, and Peter DeBenedittis, claim the New Mexico Democrat party is allowing the Lujan Grisham campaign to break the rules governing the election of delegates to the statewide convention. By “rigging” the delegate process, Lujan Grisham may be able to kick all of her Democrat opponents off the ballot and run unopposed.
Last week, Jeff Apodaca claimed “he personally saw paid campaign staffers for Lujan Grisham” committing campaign violations at recent elections for delegates to the statewide convention, and that the New Mexico Democrat state party is helping the Lujan Grisham campaign flout the rules.
Only a few days prior, Joseph Cervantes leveled similar charges, tweeting there have “countless violations by campaigns for delegate elections.”
Now, a third Democrat candidate, Peter DeBenedittis, is supporting these accusations, claiming “the delegate selection process was rife with rules violations” and that there is “not a level playing field between the campaigns.”
Given the seriousness of the claims, the Lujan Grisham campaign and the New Mexico Democrat party have an obligation to demonstrate that the delegate process has been above board. Unless these allegations can be disproven, any primary result will be forever tainted in the minds of New Mexico voters.
