Whitmer Bails on McAuliffe

After facing fierce criticism from voters for ignoring the Benton Harbor water crisis to campaign for Terry McAuliffe in Virginia, Gretchen Whitmer skipped the Saturday event citing a “schedule change.”

Schedule changes may be convenient excuse for Whitmer, but spurning McAuliffe isn’t the first time she’s tried to hide her out of state travel from Michiganders or play politics during a crisis at home.

“Gretchen Whitmer once again got caught trying to play politics in the middle of a crisis at home, fleeing her Benton Harbor water crisis to try and prop up Terry McAuliffe’s sinking campaign,” said RGA Spokesperson Chris Gustafson. “Whitmer has consistently shown that she’s more interested in working to elect Democrats than providing Michigan families with a better future.”

Lansing — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer skipped a scheduled campaign stop in Virginia Saturday morning after criticism from Republicans who argued she should be focused on the water crisis in Benton Harbor.

Whitmer’s attendance was only tentative at the event in Arlington County ahead of Virginia’s Nov. 2 gubernatorial election, said Maeve Coyle, communications director for Whitmer’s campaign. On Friday afternoon, Democrats shared social media posts that said Michigan’s Democratic governor would be going door to door to promote candidates in Virginia.
