Statement on the Passing of RGA Finance Chairman Fred Malek

WASHINGTON, DC – The Republican Governors Association released the following statements today regarding the passing of RGA Finance Chairman Fred Malek:

Statement from RGA Chairman Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts:

“Fred lived a life that was full of purpose. From the time he was a young man he was committed to making our nation stronger and America is better because of him. Fred founded the Executive Roundtable and served as its Chairman for over a decade. He made a real and lasting difference across the country. Countless governors were elected because of his tireless efforts and the RGA as we know it simply wouldn’t exist without Fred’s hard work and steadfast support. I am joined by dozens of my fellow governors and former governors in our gratitude for his many years of service. We mourn Fred’s passing and will miss his warm friendship and passionate defense of our principles. Please join me in keeping Marlene and their children and grandchildren in your thoughts and prayers.”

Statement from Executive Director David Rexrode:

“Fred Malek’s leadership was critical in transforming the RGA into the most effective political organization in the country and helping to elect 84 Republican governors during his service as our finance chairman. Fred’s unwavering passion and true belief in the good work of Republican governors took what started as a small group of like-minded individuals in 2008 and turned the RGA Executive Roundtable into a group of over 500 members who have contributed $312 million over the past 10 years, of which $92 million was contributed in the 2017-2018 cycle alone. He has left an indelible mark on the Republican Party, on states across the country, and on our nation.”

Statements from Former RGA Chairmen on Fred Malek’s passing:

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, RGA Chairman 2009-2010: “Working with Fred to grow and transform the RGA was one of the greatest privileges of my career. He leaves behind an enduring legacy of service to his Party and his country. He will be greatly missed.”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, RGA Chairman 2013-2014: “Fred Malek was a patriot. He loved his country and those who served it. America’s Republican Governors had no better friend than Fred – we will all miss him.”

His love of his country, his commitment to the political process, and his warmth and decency will be missed by all of us who he helped so much.”

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, RGA Chairman 2016-2017: “Fred spent over a decade tirelessly supporting and promoting the work of Republican governors across the country, and I am proud to call him a friend. I will miss his encouragement, his friendship, and his unyielding commitment to our nation.”
