Senator Landrieu’s Bayou Blunder

The Republican Governors Association called on Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu to detail what programs state governments should cut or what taxes they should raise after she became the first Democratic Senator to admit that states will have to shoulder significant new costs created by President Obama’s proposed health care plan.

“While we appreciate the Senator’s candor, her admission should prompt her and other Democrats to consider exactly how states are going to pay for billions of dollars in new health care costs,” said RGA Chairman Haley Barbour. “Over the past year, states have cut their budgets by billions of dollars, and many states have struggled just to maintain core services.”

“The Democrats’ health care bill is already stocked with federal tax increases,” said RGA Vice Chairman Tim Pawlenty. “Democrats now need to explain what state programs they want cut, or what state taxes they want hiked.”

Landrieu told <http://www.wwltv.com/news/Landrieu-Jindals-health-secretary-wrong-morning-noon-and-night-85522672.html> the Associated Press Friday afternoon that “the state’s going to figure out how to afford it because it’s the state’s responsibility, not just the federal government’s responsibility, to help all of the people in the state get adequate health insurance.”
