What They Are Saying: Democrat Stacey Abrams Faces Criticism After Admitting Illegal Immigrants Are Supporting Her Campaign

Georgia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams is facing growing controversy after she was caught on video last week appearing to admit that illegal immigrants will play a part in her November electoral strategy. Abrams’ admission to have the support of “those who are documented and undocumented” has attracted national and local attention. Here are some highlights of recent coverage:

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that GOP gubernatorial nominee Brian Kemp condemned Abrams’ admission, stating that “hardworking Georgians should decide who they’re governor is. Not people here illegally, like my opponent wants:”

At an event with U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Abrams said those tidal forces will invigorate a range of Georgians, including ‘the documented and undocumented…’

Kemp quickly seized on those remarks, and in an interview with Fox News Monday morning was blunt when asked what that means for Georgians.

‘It means she wants illegals to vote in Georgia. This is a shocking development in the campaign,’ said Kemp.

He then invoked a lawsuit filed by voting rights groups that seeks to count some provisional ballots flagged by elections officials as a potential non-citizen.

‘Early voting in Georgia starts today,’ he said. ‘Hardworking Georgians should decide who they’re governor is. Not people here illegally, like my opponent wants.’”

In its report on Abrams’ comments, The Washington Free Beacon wrote that Abrams has “embraced the mantle of liberalism” in her extreme campaign:

“Georgia’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said Tuesday the Democrats’ ‘blue wave’ in November would be comprised of those who are ‘documented and undocumented…

Abrams has embraced the mantle of liberalism, saying she doesn’t need ‘conservative values’ to win in Georgia. She also deflected concerns about how much of her donation money has come from out of state by saying Georgia is a ‘national state.’

Fox & Friends highlighted Abrams’ admission over the weekend, with host Ed Henry stating “here is the person who might be the next governor of Georgia basically saying illegals, they’re gonna vote:”

The Blaze described Abrams’ comments as a “stunning admission about who comprises the blue wave:”

“Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said last week that illegal immigrants — who are not eligible to vote in elections — will be a part of Democrats’ promised ‘blue wave’ in this November’s midterm elections.

Abrams made the comments while speaking to supporters at the Clayton County campaign office, the Washington Free Beacon reported. She was speaking with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).”

In its report on the controversy, The Daily Caller noted that states like California, whose policies Abrams wants to bring to Georgia, have not effectively prevented illegal aliens from registering to vote:

“Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams said the alleged ‘blue wave’ Democrats are expecting in the 2018 midterm elections is filled with “documented and undocumented” voters…

The comments come as the California Department of Motor Vehicles announced Monday that nearly 1,500 customers may have been illegally registered to vote.

Abrams is taking on Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp in the governor’s race. She has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars of her own money to try to secure a victory, and previously served as the minority leader of the Georgia House of Representatives.”
