Democrat Had Promised Opinion Following Study, Now Completed

Republican Candidates Unanimously Against Raising Taxes

Democratic candidate for governor of Nevada Rory Reid continues to maintain his silence on whether he would raise taxes to solve the state’s budget woes, despite his pledge to reveal his plans upon the release of recommendations from a legislatively-appointed study panel.  The Nevada Vision Stakeholders Group, appointed by the majority Democrats, has now proposed “sweeping changes to raise taxes and reshape state government,” yet Reid has not fulfilled his promise to respond.  All three Republican candidates have rejected tax increases.

“In his heart, Rory Reid is just like his father Harry, and would love to reach into people’s pocketbooks to solve fiscal problems,” said Tim Murtaugh, spokesman for the Republican Governors Association.  “He just won’t come out and say it.”

Reid told reporters after filing to run for governor in March that he would wait to see what the panel’s conclusions were before offering any insight into what fiscal approach he would take.

Reid: I don’t think it’s appropriate for me to try to prejudge the work that this group of citizens is doing, or to try to push them in one direction or another.  I’m going to react – it’s gonna be long before the election – I will react to their conclusions.

Reporter: If the results or conclusions just do not fit at all with what your vision is that you’ve presented so far …

Reid: I’ll react to it at that time.

Republicans Gov. Jim Gibbons, Brian Sandoval and Mike Montandon all oppose raising taxes.

“There’s no doubt that Rory was trying to buy himself some time before he had to answer the basic question: will you or won’t you raise taxes?” Murtaugh said.  “His time is up and he must tell the people the truth right now.”
