Rhode Island Democrat Governor Gina Raimondo’s re-election hopes suffered a major setback last week as her administration was consumed by crisis due to a missed court appeal deadline that may cost the state millions of dollars. In a new editorial, The Providence Journal highlighted the scandal, claiming it “has taken a toll on the governor politically” after “grueling days of headlines about incompetence in her administration.”
Unfortunately for Raimondo, her problems got even worse this weekend as Our Revolution, a Bernie Sanders-aligned group that has challenged status quo Democrat candidates around the country, announced it will endorse her primary opponent, Matt Brown. Their decision to oppose her re-election will only further add to Raimondo’s base problems, which have grown since Brown decided to challenge her.
With worsening scandals surrounding her administration dominating the headlines while her party’s liberal base voters begin to abandon her, Raimondo’s re-election hopes have taken a serious hit as doubts continue to grow about her ability to lead.
