Rhode Island Dem Gov Gina Raimondo Loses More Support With Her Party’s Base Voters

Rhode Island Democrats continue to sour on Gina Raimondo’s re-election efforts as her primary opponent, Matt Brown, challenges her from the left. Less than a week after a state representative endorsed Brown and the state’s Secretary of State refused to endorse Raimondo, a leader of the Rhode Island Progressive Democrats, Capri Catanzaro, penned a scathing op-ed in Uprise RI, blasting Raimondo’s lack of progressive bona fides while endorsing Brown for the Democrat nomination.

Catanzaro called claims that Democrats are superior managers “laughable if applied to Raimondo,” citing her mismanagement of state social services while also lamenting how Raimondo “fails to deliver even moderate incremental change” desired by progressive voters. Catanzaro also stated that the arguments for Raimondo’s candidacy are “either baseless or rooted in personal attacks.”

With Brown’s candidacy gaining support from the left-wing of the party as he steps up his criticism of Raimondo’s failed record as governor, America’s most vulnerable Democrat governor seeking re-election continues to face a difficult path to victory in November as her base problems worsen.
