Rhode Island Dem Gov Gina Raimondo Faces Eroding Support Over Tolls

Unpopular Democrat governor Gina Raimondo is losing even more support over tolls in Rhode Island, now putting her at odds with a key leader of her own party. A new report reveals that the Rhode Island Trucking Association (RITA) is planning on suing the state over Raimondo’s plan, calling it “discriminatory” against truckers. This comes after RITA’s PAC donated to Raimondo’s re-election efforts and signals continued eroding support for her campaign as her approval rating falls to an all-time low.

To make matters worse for Raimondo, one of Rhode Island’s top Democrat statewide officeholders, U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, appeared to state his opposition to imposing tolls on Twitter this week. With Whitehouse on the ballot alongside Raimondo this November, their disagreement on tolls leaves Raimondo less able to present herself as part of a unified front to voters.

As Raimondo’s tolling plan faces more criticism from Rhode Islanders, while even top leaders of her own party in Rhode Island appear to oppose her agenda, her decreasing support among Rhode Island voters continues to create heartburn for her campaign.
