In an attempt to wiggle out of responsibility for his reckless fiscal record at the lottery, Tim Cahill has taken to Boston’s airwaves over the last 24 hours in an effort to rewrite history.  Responding to charges contained in an ad paid for by the Republican Governors Association, Cahill now denies that he spent over a million dollars in taxpayer money to renovate his Lottery office headquarters, despite previous press coverage to the contrary.  The RGA is now calling on Cahill to disclose the lease agreements for the Lottery headquarters from his time in office and any documents related to the renovation.

“Everyone knows about the art deco sofas and flat screen TVs, but Tim Cahill’s new story about who paid for them doesn’t add up,” said Tim Murtaugh, spokesman for the Republican Governors Association.  “He should release all the records so that the voters don’t have to just take his word for it.”

As reported at the time:

The lottery also agreed to a more costly lease to pay for $1.3 million in renovations at its Braintree headquarters, including a slick upgrade of the lobby. Visitors can now watch Keno and Mass Millions advertisements on two large flat-screen televisions as they lounge on lime-green art deco couches while a receptionist works under the glow of blue glass pendant lamps.

“And [Cahill] said the lobby was redecorated in an effort to make it ‘more enticing’ for visitors and winning ticket holders who come in to claim their money.”

“‘We want people to have a good experience,’ [Cahill] said.”  (Boston Globe, December 17, 2008)

Incredibly, Cahill took to the Charlie Manning Show on WRKO-AM yesterday to deny that taxpayers footed the bill for the office makeover.

However, earlier today Cahill continued his image rehabilitation tour by visiting with Tom and Todd, also on WRKO.  The hosts pinned him down on the fact that the lease went up due in part to the renovations – just as the Globe reported in 2008.
