A new report from Buzzfeed is calling attention to Democrats’ upcoming trouble in the Minnesota governor’s race – rural voters. Minnesota is now being called the “biggest battleground of the midterms,” and with President Trump nearly winning the state in 2016, political analysts are saying that the state is on the verge of going red this cycle.
Buzzfeed reports that Democrats in the state are “on the precipice of losing” rural voters and are “becoming a party made up solely of the Twin Cities and upscale suburbs.”
This trend towards elite-driven urban politics is readily apparent in the Democrat gubernatorial primary. Candidate Tim Walz was caught on tape disparaging rural Minnesota late last year as “mostly rocks and cows,” and Rebecca Otto has been running an unapologetically far-left campaign, including supporting a regressive energy tax hike that could fall hardest on rural Minnesotans.
