North Carolina Democrat Governor Roy Cooper is facing heavy criticism for appointing a politician to a state civil rights panel who has a history of comparing law enforcement officers to terrorists.
Last month, Cooper appointed Charlotte City Councilwoman LaWana Mayfield to North Carolina’s Human Relations Commission, despite the fact that she referred to police officers as “homegrown terrorists” in a tweet last March. Mayfield also appears to be a 9/11 truther and questioned if planes actually crashed into the World Trade Center. The Charlotte Observer condemned her conduct, writing in an editorial that she “normalizes the kind of inflammatory rhetoric that increasingly pollutes public discourse.” Now The Associated Press reports that Cooper is facing calls to withdraw Mayfield’s appointment as controversy grows around her offensive comments.
Cooper’s decision to appoint an individual willing to equate police officers to terrorists for a state board shows a disturbing lack of judgement and raises serious questions about his regard for those who serve and protect North Carolina’s citizens.
