No Comment Cordray Still Won’t Discuss Bill O’Neill’s Demeaning Comments

Weeks after he decided to hastily resign from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to join the race for Ohio governor, D.C. bureaucrat Richard Cordray still refuses to weigh in on the scandal surrounding his close political ally, Supreme Court Justice Bill O’Neill. O’Neill has been engulfed in controversy for weeks after he published a Facebook post defending disgraced Democrat Senator Al Franken while also making demeaning comments regarding women from his past, resulting in numerous calls for him to resign and drop out of the governor’s race.

But while all four of the other declared Democrat gubernatorial candidates called on O’Neill to end his campaign, Cordray has been completely silent on the matter, giving no comment on the scandal despite giving multiple press interviews since his resignation. In fact, O’Neill and Cordray appear to have remained in close contact since the story broke on his comments, with O’Neill claiming last week to have “had a half-hour conversation” with Cordray. O’Neill’s ties to the former D.C. bureaucrat have been well documented, with O’Neill even confirming weeks ago that he would drop out of the race if Cordray became a candidate. Despite this, Cordray has not made any statement supporting or condemning his friend’s inexcusable conduct.

As Cordray appears poised to enter the Ohio governor’s race, his silence on O’Neill’s offensive comments is unacceptable. If he wants to pursue the state’s highest office, he cannot be the only candidate who refuses to discuss the embattled Justice’s demeaning statements, especially given his close relationship to O’Neill.
