NM Dems’ previously reliable Hispanic vote turns back on MLG

Prominent Democratic political operatives, including NM’s own Sisto Abeyta, are ringing alarm bells about the once-reliable Hispanic vote fleeing the party, according to a new report.

Take a look at why:

Latinos, especially Mexican Americans, still lean Democratic. But Democrats have been losing ground among these voters in recent elections because the party hasn’t been paying enough attention to them.

  • Democrats talk about climate change, but dismiss the fact that many Latinos work in lucrative oilfield jobs in New Mexicoand West Texas.
  • Democrats talk about diversity. But by pleasing white progressives, they push out moderate Hispanic candidates.
  • Democrats target Latinos by talking about immigration. But polls show immigration ranks 5th or 6th among the issues most important to these voters. The economy is usually the top concern.

Yet another sign that scandal-plagued Governor Lujan Grisham has a long row to hoe as she seeks reelection.

“Michelle Lujan Grisham’s lockdowns and anti-oil policies ripped jobs away from Hispanics in the state,” said RGA spokesman Will Reinert. “The polling is clear that Governor Lujan Grisham cannot rely on a significant portion of her 2018 base to vote for her again this fall.”
