New Audio: Ralph Northam Slams Tom Perriello For “Deceiving” Virginia Voters

With less than 24 hours until voters go to the polls, the neck-and-neck Virginia Democrat gubernatorial primary is getting even more ugly between Ralph Northam and Tom Perriello. Caught on a new audio recording, Northam slammed his rival Perriello’s use of former President Barack Obama in his campaign’s TV ads, referring to the ads as “deceiving,” and reiterating that he was assured by Eric Holder that not only would Obama not endorse in the Virginia primary, but suggesting  that Obama was upset and “taken aback” by Perriello’s use of him in the ads.

RALPH NORTHAM: “I think people need to understand I’m actually the second person after Tim Kaine to endorse Barack Obama when he ran his race, I was on his team for a long time. And that commercial, that commercial is a little bit deceiving… I understand that but you look at it, it says November, how’s that happen? But I know Eric Holder who was our attorney general, very well. I’ve had talks with him and you know President Obama has no intention of getting in the middle of this primary. I think he might’ve been a little taken aback with some of the use of this in an ad…”

In the recording Northam also repeats a false claim about his endorsement of Barack Obama in 2008, claiming he was the “second person” after Tim Kaine to endorse Obama. This was revealed as false last week when Blue Virginia reported on June 6, that other Virginia Democrats, including former Governor Douglas Wilder and Congressman Bobby Scott, endorsed Obama before Northam. But as the audio shows, this hasn’t stopped Northam from repeating this false claim on the campaign trail.

As the divisive Virginia Democrat gubernatorial primary draws to a close, Ralph Northam and Tom Perriello are willing to say and do anything to mislead voters. No matter who emerges as the primary winner tomorrow, Virginia Democrats face a daunting task to unifying their party for November.
