With Nevada Democrats facing an increasingly “combative” and “expensive” fight in their gubernatorial primary, political analysts are already souring on their chances of winning in November. This weekend, longtime Nevada political reporter Jon Ralston predicted Republicans will hold the governorship on Election Day.
To make matters worse for Democrats, Ralston also predicts that their party’s most well-funded candidate, Steve Sisolak, will lose his primary race to his “unabashed liberal” opponent, Chris Giunchigliani, which would only drive the party leftward and even further out of touch with Nevada voters. Ralston’s predictions come as University of Nevada, Reno political scientist Eric Herzik warns how the Democrats’ looming primary battle could hurt the party in the general election as it could “drain campaign coffers and expose candidates’ weaknesses.”
With Nevada Democrats tangling with the prospect of a drawn-out, expensive gubernatorial primary fight that threatens to fuel the party’s divisions and drag it further away from mainstream Nevadans, political analysts around the state are already souring on their chances of winning this November.
