In Maine’s final gubernatorial debate, Paul LePage expressed his clear vision to ease the cost of living and turn the state around — just like he did when he took office during the darkest days of the Great Recession.

Meanwhile, Janet Mills could not defend her record of higher costs and wasteful spending.

LePage:  “I took over in 2011. In the last 60 years the state of Maine has been under control of the Democratic party all but for 2 years: ’11 and ’12. And despite what she’s saying, I built and left an enormously good economy. Then she inherited $15 billion dollars and now she’s claiming that it’s her fiscal management. The $850 was not based on growth, it was based on forecast.”

Watch: LePage will suspend the state’s gas tax

Moderator: “When gas hits a certain price should the state gas tax be suspended?”

LePage: “Absolutely. I’m telling you right now, we are struggling from high heating costs, and I believe that in the winter months, from November on, while you’re heating your homes and you’re paying high electricity costs, yes.”
