Intelligencer Endorses Mike DeWine For Ohio Governor

Republican Mike DeWine continues to build momentum on the campaign trail for Ohio’s highest office, winning the endorsement of The Intelligencer.

In its endorsement, The Intelligencer commended DeWine for having “made a name for himself as a leader in battling the substance abuse crisis” while also working to address the state’s rape kit backlog left by his predecessor.  The Intelligencer also praised DeWine’s platform for “tax relief, cutting the regulatory burden on job creators, public school reform, improving health care while safeguarding insurance coverage for Ohioans with low incomes and/or pre-existing conditions and ensuring schools are safe.”

The Intelligencer writes:

“It became apparent during the 2016 presidential election that many Ohioans are fed up with traditional politics, ready to embrace government outsiders.

But one long-time insider earned Buckeye State residents’ trust. He is state Attorney General Mike DeWine, who is running for governor in the Nov. 6 election.

A single initiative by DeWine makes it clear he shares Ohioans’ anger at the many times government has failed them.

While serving in the U.S. Senate, DeWine learned to his horror that police departments throughout the state had thousands of ‘rape kits’ gathering dust in their storage rooms. The kits, containing physical evidence, had never been tested. DeWine sent federal resources in an attempt to help.

Upon becoming attorney general, DeWine launched a crash program to get the kits tested as soon as possible. At last count, DNA from the tests had been used to identify about 4,600 assailants. Hundreds of them, some serial rapists, have been brought to justice.

That campaign alone makes it clear DeWine is no politician seeking power for his own sake. Rather, he uses it for the good of Ohioans.

He also has made a name for himself as a leader in battling the substance abuse crisis. Not content to fight illicit drugs solely through the attorney general’s traditional law enforcement role, DeWine has emphasized treatment for addicts, too.

His platform includes tax relief, cutting the regulatory burden on job creators, public school reform, improving health care while safeguarding insurance coverage for Ohioans with low incomes and/or pre-existing conditions and ensuring schools are safe — to name just some of his positions.

The Intelligencer endorses DeWine for governor. Ohioans who want government that responds to what they need and want — not what the bureaucracy desires — should vote for him in the Nov. 6 election.”
