ICYMI: Maryland GOP Governor Larry Hogan Highlights Bipartisanship In State of State Address

In his fourth state of the state address, Maryland GOP Governor Larry Hogan highlighted his bipartisan approach to governing that has awarded him a sky-high 71% approval rating. Hogan called for unity amidst partisan gridlock in D.C. and lauded his successful economic agenda that has brought jobs back to Maryland.

Hogan’s 23-minute speech to the Democrat-dominated General Assembly called for bipartisanship and was delivered in a conciliatory tone that used the word “together” 14 times. He repeatedly called for Maryland leaders to transcend politics and compromise — a call made in contrast to what he described as a gridlocked and broken Washington 35 miles down the road.

“Instead of becoming more like Washington, let’s send a message to Washington by putting the politics aside and coming together for all Marylanders,” Hogan said.

While Washington is plagued by “hyper-partisanship and inflammatory rhetoric,” Hogan said he and the majority-Democrat General Assembly “have chosen to engage in thoughtful and civil debate” and “risen above the fray of partisan politics.” Looking back on his inauguration three years ago, Hogan praised lawmakers for helping him live up to his promises.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is calling on lawmakers to put politics aside and come together for all state residents.

The Republican governor underscored bipartisanship in his fourth State of the State speech on Wednesday to the General Assembly, which is controlled by Democrats.

He also highlighted some of his legislative priorities, including measures to fight violent crime by passing tougher minimum sentences. He also urged lawmakers to pass reform legislation on how the state draws its congressional and state legislative maps.

Hogan says he’ll sign legislation that is advancing in the legislature to end parental rights of rapists over children conceived through rape.

The governor also emphasized the importance of continuing the fight against opioid addiction.
