With recent polls showing Vermont Governor Phil Scott’s approval rating soaring to 63 percent, making him one of the most popular governors in America, Democrats are quickly souring on their chances of victory in the 2018 gubernatorial race. At a recent “secret” Vermont Senate Democrats meeting reported by Seven Days VT, party leaders “tacitly acknowledged Scott’s likely reelection.”
To make matters worse for Democrats, the frontrunner for their party’s nomination, James Ehlers, has made the puzzling decision to build his campaign platform on opposing job growth in Vermont, stating his opposition to increasing the state’s labor force. Ehlers’ openly anti-jobs campaign threatens to saddle Democrats with a nominee whose proposals would undo all of the economic progress achieved under Governor Scott’s administration, taking Vermont backwards.
While Governor Scott remains committed to spurring job growth and reforming state government through bipartisan solutions, Democrats appear poised to nominate a gubernatorial candidate committed to weakening Vermont’s job market, hurting their chances for victory in November.
