Florida Dem Gov Candidate Gillum’s Email Problems Aren’t Going Away

After his campaign roll out “stumbled” through controversy over the use of taxpayer funded email resources to send election materials, Florida Democrat gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum’s problems aren’t going away. A week after he was forced to publicly apologize for potentially playing fast and loose with Florida’s election laws, new details are emerging about the Tallahassee mayor’s actions, which have plagued his campaign only days into it. The Tallahassee Democrat reports:

“The records show that in all, the Mayor’s Office sent 60 mass emails between Feb. 17, 2016, and Feb. 15, 2017. The NGP VAN software allowed the Mayor’s Office to keep track of how many emails went out, how many people got them, how many people opened them and how many clicked on links to invitations and videos.

Two of the emails referred to Gillum’s speech last year at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. Another invited recipients to a Tallahassee appearance by then-Vice President Joe Biden. Another sent to the Young Elected Officials Network included a link to an op-ed by Gillum called, “How I Fought the NRA” and mentions of his #DefendLocal initiative.”

Since news broke on the controversy last week, Gillum has been reluctant to answer questions on the subject. After refusing to speak with Florida’s Capitol press corps, Gillum’s office is still refusing to answer any questions on his emails:

“The Mayor’s Office declined to answer questions Tuesday about the emails, including how it collected the email addresses and whether any of them had been purchased. The office instead referred the Democrat to a previous statement.”

Just weeks into his gubernatorial bid, Andrew Gillum has shown and continues to show an alarming lack of accountability for someone seeking the highest office in the Sunshine State. The people of Florida deserve a leader who will work tirelessly to uphold the public’s trust. Andrew Gillum cannot be trusted to do so.
