Praising his successful efforts to “govern from the middle” and keep his promises, the Capital Gazette has endorsed Republican Governor Larry Hogan for re-election. Hogan “continues to impress us with a reasonable tone and realistic approach to governing,” writes the paper’s editorial board.
Specifically, the Capital Gazette praises Hogan’s record commitment to education funding, and how “seriously” he takes the opioid crises. Hogan also earns praise for his stewardship of the economy. Under Hogan, “Maryland has added about 145,000 jobs in the last four years, and the unemployment rate has dropped from 5.7 percent to 4.2 percent.”
The Capital Gazette concludes:
Four years ago, a brutal recession left the state with a lingering structural deficit, an unemployment rate higher than the national average, an economy kept on life support by federal payrolls, taxpayers in a mutinous mood, and a deluge of complaints about the state’s unfriendliness to business.
Hogan can rightly take credit for addressing those problems and is campaigning on a promise to continue that work.
We call on voters to give him that opportunity. We strongly urge a vote for Larry Hogan as governor.
