Bruce Rauner’s School Choice Plan Praised As A “New Direction” For Illinois

Fulfilling his promise to turn Illinois around, GOP Governor Bruce Rauner is receiving praise for a new school choice program that’s likely to provide $100 million in scholarships for students in need.

The News-Gazette editorial board is praising Rauner’s school choice plan, the first of its kind in Illinois, as a “new direction” for the state.

They write, Illinois’ new “Invest in Kids” scholarship program got off to a fast start last week, attracting more than $36 million of the $100 million limit on its first day.”

“…This program is a step in a new direction for Illinois, one aimed primarily at helping young people get a better education and, as a consequence, win a brighter future. It’s hard to argue with the goal of helping those most in need do better in life, and that’s what this public/private partnership should help accomplish.”

Rauner successfully negotiated the inclusion of the school choice program alongside an education budget that brings record dollars to students across the state. Rauner campaigned on improving education in Illinois, and this school choice program is evidence that he is delivering on his promises.
