With less than a month until Election Day, Republican Governor Larry Hogan holds a “formidable” lead over his far-left challenger Ben Jealous in a state where Democrats have a 2 to 1 registration advantage. A new poll from the Washington Post finds Hogan holds a 20-point lead over Jealous among likely voters, 58% to 38%. Hogan’s lead has widened by eight points from the Post’s last poll from June.
The Washington Post explains, “Hogan appears to have assembled a coalition that cuts into the Democratic base, giving him a clear advantage over Jealous in bellwether Baltimore County and running competitively in heavily Democratic Montgomery… The poll suggests that Jealous, a former NAACP president and first-time candidate who has vastly less campaign cash than Hogan, is struggling to introduce himself to Maryland voters.”
Michael Hanmer, research director for the Center for American Politics and Citizenship at the University of Maryland, notes that, “The level of support for Hogan, even among registered Democrats, is extremely high.”
Governor Larry Hogan even holds a “higher favorability ratings among Democrats than Jealous — 59 percent view the governor favorably while 52 percent of Democrats feel that way about Jealous.” In contrast, Ben Jealous’ unfavorable ratings among the broader electorate “have doubled since June.”
Governor Larry Hogan has delivered results for the people of Maryland, and they are set to reward his strong leadership with a second term.
