As he struggles during his first year in office, fights with the legislature and receives negative press, New Jersey Democrat Governor Phil Murphy is taking the unprecedented step of creating his own taxpayer-funded, state-run news service.
It’s an outright effort to create taxpayer-funded propaganda, and now the Wall Street Journal is calling Murphy out.
The WSJ explains that taxpayer dollars will be funneled towards news organizations, directed by a consortium that is overseen by appointees of Governor Murphy and the state’s Democratic legislature. The plan is the “brainchild” of “a left-leaning organization.”
“Creating a government press corps isn’t the answer,” writes the WSJ editorial board. “…It’s doubtful that journalists whose grants ultimately depend on politicians will write hard-hitting stories embarrassing those politicians. Phil Murphy’s community press corps is likely to devolve into a cheerleading corps for Phil Murphy’s agenda.”
