Top Florida Democrat Leader: Issues Don’t Matter To Us

The Florida Democratic Party has a new president with a clear campaign message for Florida’s gubernatorial candidates:  forget about the important issues. During a meeting last week, FDP’s new president Sally Boynton Brown emphasized that Democrat gubernatorial campaigns in the Sunshine State need to target Floridians as “emotional beings” instead of prioritizing actual policy platforms or ideas for solving key issues. This bizarre strategy might be good fundraising emails to extreme partisans, but for the large majority of mainstream Florida voters, it only affirms that Florida Democrats are unable to come up with new ideas to solve the most pressing issues and can’t be trusted to lead.

This stands in strong contrast to Republican leadership under Governor Rick Scott, who made jobs and the economy issue No. 1 and oversaw the creation of over 1.3 million new jobs, cut taxes, put more money back in Floridians’ pockets, and continues leading Florida in the right direction. Florida Democrats now have nothing left to attack, so their new strategy seems to be running campaigns about nothing.

“…how does the new, incoming brass running the Florida Democratic Party respond? By telling constituents that ‘issues’ don’t matter and that it’s not the party’s job to focus on policies that will actually help anyone…

How important is it for candidates to concentrate on ‘issues’ like health care or economic equality, one audience member asked. Her answer? Not very. She said candidates moving forward should focus on ‘identity messages’ instead, which she didn’t actually define.

A very confused Brown repeatedly contradicted herself during the hour and a half long Broward County Caucus meeting in failed attempts to answer questions about the role of the Florida Democratic Party.

…Brown argued that poor people are simultaneously struggling to make ends meet but also don’t vote based on what policies will benefit them.”
