States With Republican Governors Continue To Lead On Job Creation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Republican Governors Association Chairman Governor Bill Haslam issued the following statement regarding the April state unemployment figures released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

“Republican governors have the right ideas that deliver results for their states, driving pro-jobs and pro-growth policies that work. These reformers are leading the way, and in strong position for re-election in 2015 and 2016, because they are winning the fight for jobs and economic growth. While some candidates just talk about creating jobs and reviving struggling economies, these Republican governors are actually doing it. ”

  • Thanks to the strong leadership by Governor Mike Pence, Indiana’s unemployment rate dropped to 5.4% in April, on par with the national average, and the state’s lowest point in seven years. The unemployment rate has fallen nearly three full points since Governor Pence was elected in November 2012, further cementing Indiana as a state that works.
  • Governor Phil Bryant has been the difference maker for Mississippi’s economy, fostering a drop in unemployment from 9.6% when he was elected in November 2011 to today’s 6.6%, a three point drop and the state’s lowest point in seven years.
  • North Carolina’s unemployment rate has dropped nearly three and half points since Governor Pat McCrory was elected, a sure sign he has the state on the right track. Today, the state’s unemployment is down to 5.5% and job creators are looking to North Carolina as a place where they can grow and succeed. Governor McCrory’s pro-jobs policies kick-started the Carolina Comeback, which is now firing on all cylinders.
  • In North Dakota, unemployment stands at 3.1%, with Governor Jack Dalrymple at the helm, well below the national average and the second lowest unemployment rate in the nation. Governor Dalrymple’s commitment to a brighter future in the state is yielding real results.
  • Utah is experiencing record job creation thanks to the successful policies put in place by Governor Gary Herbert. Since he assumed office in August 2009, Utah’s unemployment rate has fallen over four points, from 7.8%, to today’s 3.4%, the state’s lowest mark in nearly seven years.  Utah also boasts the third lowest unemployment rate in the nation.
