U.S. Attorney Launches Federal Investigation of Failed Governor Dan Malloy

“The federal investigation is a major political complication for Malloy at time when he is in the spotlight as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a campaign surrogate for Hillary Clinton.”

Hours before he takes the stage in Philadelphia at the DNC, Democratic Governors Association Chairman and Connecticut Democrat Governor Dan Malloy is facing yet another scandal, as a U.S. attorney has launched an investigation to determine if Malloy “broke the law” during his 2014 re-election campaign.

“It’s time Dan Malloy comes clean with Connecticut voters,” said RGA Communications Director Jon Thompson. “Instead of governing his state, Dan Malloy turned his political ambition to Hillary Clinton and the DGA, which led him to a low 28% approval rating and the infamous title as the most unpopular governor in America. Now, Malloy is facing a federal investigation for possible illegal campaign fundraising, joining Hillary Clinton as another corrupt politician that many believe broke the law.”

“A federal grand jury with the power to subpoena documents and compel testimony is trying to do what state elections regulators could not: Resolve whether the Connecticut Democratic Party and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy broke the law in soliciting contributions from state contractors for his re-election in 2014. The federal investigation is a major political complication for Malloy at time when he is in the spotlight as chairman of the Democratic Governors Association and a campaign surrogate for Hillary Clinton.  It comes after a thinly veiled public appeal by Charles Urso, a retired elections investigator and FBI agent, for a deeper look at how Malloy accepted $6.5 million in public financing, which required him to sign an affidavit promising to abide by spending restrictions and contribution of no more than $100, and also benefitted from state contractor contributions of up to $10,000 to the state party.” (Keith Phaneuf, Mark Pazniokas, “U.S. Attorney Opens Probe Of Malloy’s 2014 Campaign Fundraising,” CT Mirror, 7/22/2016)
